Driver’s License

You must apply for a New York driver's license within 30 days of establishing residence.

If you hold an out-of-state or Canadian license that has been in effect for at least 6 months, and is valid or has expired within the last 12 months, you will only have to fill out the paperwork for a New York State license. The lines at the DMV are notoriously long, make sure you are in the right line before standing in one place for hours.


Vehicle Registration

New state residents are required to register their vehicle in New York upon establishing residence. Provide a completed application form, out-of-state title, and bring your vehicle to a DMV office for verification of VIN number. Vehicles purchased within 90 days of moving to New York may be subject to additional sales tax.
